Formula One - Monaco - Maserati 250F & Tyrrell P34

2013 season has just started and 3 of the 19 races have already completed. As usual my bet is on the Ferrari's ( always ). I was still searching for a stamp released to honor Sebastian Vettel or his team Red bull Racing for their 3 consecutive championships ( 2010-2012 ). With nothing out there yet on these, I came across 2 stamps for the year 2013 from Monaco and these are very special. Let's see why.

Maserati 250F : Being considered as one of the finest single-seater cars, it is also the successful racing car ever made by Maserati in their history of  Formula 1 racing. Introduced in 1954 and used untill 1960, it competed in 46 Formula One championship races with 277 entries with 8 wins. Juan Manuel Fangio, one of the greatest driver ever has won 6 races out of this front-engined F1 car, the other driver being Stirling Moss with 2 wins.
Tyrrell P34 : Formula one is all about innovative design, dynamics, speed and performance. Lots have been tried, some of them were successful but some of were not. This one belongs to the latter but something very interesting in the design. Tyrrell P34 is a six wheeled formula one racing car, 4 smaller tyres at the front and 2 normal sized tyres at the back. The design was successful when introduced in 1976 and survived another season but due to technical problems around tyres and suspension, Tyrrell discontinued the model and pulled out the design from Formula one, 1977 being the last season.

Niki Lauda

Austria has issued more stamps related to Formula One Sports than any other country in the world. It hosted its first race in 1964 and the last race in 2003. Jochen Rindt and Niki Lauda are the only 2 Formula One Champions from Austria till date. In 2005 Austria post issued two commemorative stamps ( through special issue series ) to honor these champions. Niki Lauda has won 3 Formula One Championships ( 1975 , 1977 & 1984 ) , 2 of them with the team Ferrari and the remaining one with team Mclaren. The other drivers who have won 3 Formula One Championships are Jack Brabham , Jackie Stewart , Nelson Piquet and Aryton Senna.

In the year 1976 Niki Lauda survived an accident in the German Grand Prix which could have almost cost his life but fortunately for him he was back to the racing track after a gap of 6 weeks and finished fourth in the Italian Grand Prix. This was considered as one of the remarkable comeback in the history of Formula One.

The stamp features a portrait of Niki Lauda , his signature and a Ferrari Formula One racing car in the background. The top of the stamp has a title "Formula 1 Legends". ( Formel 1 Legenden ).
